Understanding Lab Diamonds & Moissanite
Make an informed decision about your jewelry purchase with our comprehensive guide to lab diamonds and moissanite. Learn about quality, characteristics, and what makes each stone special.
The 4 Cs of Diamonds
1. Cut
The cut determines how well a diamond reflects light, creating its brilliance and sparkle. Cut quality ranges from Excellent to Poor.
- Excellent/Ideal: Maximum brilliance and fire
- Very Good: Exceptional sparkle at a better value
- Good: Beautiful appearance with good value
2. Color
Diamond color is graded from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow/brown). Colorless diamonds are the most valuable.
- D-F: Colorless - highest quality
- G-J: Near colorless—excellent value
- K-M: Faint color - budget-friendly
3. Clarity
Clarity refers to the presence of internal inclusions or external blemishes. Graded from Flawless (FL) to Included (I).
- FL-IF: Flawless to Internally Flawless - extremely rare
- VVS1-VVS2: Very Very Slightly Included—excellent quality
- VS1-VS2: Very Slightly Included - great value
- SI1-SI2: Slightly Included—good value, inclusions may be visible
4. Carat Weight
Carat measures a diamond's weight. One carat equals 200 milligrams. Larger diamonds are rarer and more valuable per carat.
